GemCities is operated by one person. We take abuse reports seriously and handle them personally — not algorithmically. This page explains what to report, how to report it, and what happens after you do.
What to Report
Use this channel to report content that violates our Terms of Service. This includes:
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Report immediately. We will remove the content, permanently ban the account, and report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) via the CyberTipline as required by federal law (18 U.S.C. § 2258A).
- Threats of violence. Content that makes credible threats against a specific person or group.
- Harassment and targeted abuse. A pattern of content intended to intimidate or harm a specific individual.
- Hate speech. Content that attacks people based on protected characteristics (race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.).
- Doxxing. Publication of someone's private personal information — address, phone number, workplace, financial details — without consent and with intent to harm.
- Copyright infringement. If you are the rights holder or authorized agent, use our DMCA process instead. DMCA notices require a formal written submission to dmca@gemcities.com with specific legal elements.
What Is Not an Abuse Report
The following do not violate our Terms of Service and are not grounds for removal:
- Opinions you disagree with, including political or social commentary.
- Satire, parody, or criticism of public figures.
- Content that is offensive but does not target a protected class or specific individual.
How to Submit a Report
Send an email to abuse@gemcities.com with the following information:
- The Gemini URL of the specific file or capsule you are reporting (e.g.,
gemini://username.gemcities.com/filename.gmi). - The nature of the violation — what rule you believe is violated and why.
- Your contact information (name and email) so we can follow up if needed. Reports may be submitted anonymously, but we may be unable to follow up without contact information.
What Happens Next
We aim to review and respond to all reports within 48 hours. For CSAM reports, response is immediate.
Depending on the severity and nature of the violation:
- First offense (non-severe): The specific file is removed and the account holder is notified with an explanation.
- Repeated violations or severe content: The account is suspended and all content is removed.
- CSAM or credible threats: Immediate removal, permanent ban, and report to the appropriate authority.
We will notify you of the outcome if you provided contact information.
False Reports
Submitting an abuse report in bad faith — to silence legitimate speech or harass another user — is itself a violation of our Terms of Service and may result in suspension of the reporting account.
Emergency Situations
If you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first. GemCities cannot provide real-time emergency response.
